About Barbourne in Bloom
Barbourne in Bloom is part of the Royal Horticultural Societies (RHS) ‘It’s your neighbourhood’ campaign. To be part of this we have to demonstrate that we have the following values at the heart of what we do:
- Community participation – this means as many people as possible from our local area are getting involved. There are lots of different ways to do this from planting wildlife-friendly flowers to cutting a hole in your fence for hedgehogs, from doing a litter pick to sharing your ideas with us on our social pages and much more in between!
- Environmental responsibility – everything we do should be helping our local environment, whether that be keeping it clean or making it better for the people and wildlife that live here.
- Gardening achievement – we also want our neighbourhood to look great and that means making our green spaces, big or small, private or public look as good as they can be – of course, if that’s with lots of wildlife friendly flowers – even better!
Growing our community
We will be visited by a RHS assessor each year who will look at what we have done so far and offer us expert advice on other improvements we could make to our neighbourhood.
It’s really important that we know what YOU think would make our neighbourhood better, cleaner and greener so please get in touch with us though our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages or by email. You can find out more about the ‘It’s your neighbourhood’ by clicking here.

Sharman Close: Areas of achievement
Prior to my visit I had some photos emailed to me from Karen Lewing showing views of the close in Springtime – numerous spring bulbs including some scented multi-headed narcissi and blossom on the cherry tree. The central raised beds have sizeable lavender plants that were buzzing with so many bees and other insects enjoying the pollen and nectar.
Karen and Hannah were very keen to show me a few of the residents back gardens and these were a joy to see – so much effort and pride is evident and via the Housing groups Community Chest fund, residents can request e.g. water butts, compost bins, bug hotels and nest boxes. A few hanging baskets were showing excellent colour and the whole site was generally clean and tidy with no evidence of litter, dog fouling or graffiti.
Well done to all the residents who have spent a lot of their time and money improving their gardens and well done to Councillors Hannah and Karen for their time and effort in trying to get improvements put into action.
